Travelling to the United States from the Netherlands

ESTA, Visa Waiver Program, entry requirements and practical travel guide — Updated May 2026

Dutch citizens: ESTA required No visa for stays up to 90 days New ESTA fee: $40 from Sept 2025

Do Dutch Citizens Need a Visa to Travel to the United States?

No — in most cases. The Netherlands has been a member of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) since 1986, one of the programme’s founding participants. Dutch passport holders can travel to the United States for tourism, business, or transit for stays of up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. However, you must have an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before you board your flight, ferry, or cruise ship. For a full overview of the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands and its services, see our homepage.

Dutch citizens travelling to the U.S. — at a glance: No visa required for stays up to 90 days · ESTA required before departure · ESTA fee: USD 40 (from September 2025) · ESTA valid for 2 years or until passport expiry · Apply only at esta.cbp.dhs.gov · Biometric (e-passport) required · Passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay.

What Is ESTA and How to Apply

ESTA is an automated online system that determines whether citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries are eligible to travel to the United States. It is not a visa — it is a pre-travel authorisation that allows U.S. Customs and Border Protection to screen travellers before they arrive. An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States; CBP officers make the final decision at the port of entry.

Apply only through the official U.S. government website. The only legitimate ESTA application portal is esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Numerous third-party websites charge inflated fees — sometimes three to four times the official rate — for processing ESTA applications. These sites are not affiliated with the U.S. government. The official fee is USD 40.
1

Go to the official ESTA portal

Visit esta.cbp.dhs.gov — the only official U.S. government ESTA website. Create an account or continue as a guest applicant.

2

Complete the application form

Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your Dutch passport, including your passport number and expiry date. Answer the eligibility questions on health, criminal history, and travel to certain countries. Double-check all entries before submitting — errors can result in a denial.

3

Pay the ESTA fee

Pay USD 40 by credit or debit card. This fee — raised from USD 21 in September 2025 — is non-refundable, including in the event of a denial. The fee comprises a USD 10 processing fee and a USD 30 authorisation fee.

4

Receive your authorisation

Most applications are approved within minutes. In some cases the system returns a “Pending” status — check back within 72 hours. U.S. Customs and Border Protection recommends applying at least 72 hours before departure. Your ESTA is electronically linked to your passport — no printout is required, but saving the confirmation is advisable.

5

Travel to the United States

Present your Dutch passport at check-in and at the U.S. port of entry. Your ESTA will be verified automatically. At U.S. airports, you will be enrolled in the US-VISIT programme, which collects a digital photograph and fingerscans of two index fingers. A CBP officer will make the final decision on admission.

When You Cannot Use ESTA — Visa Required

Not all Dutch passport holders qualify for the Visa Waiver Program. You must apply for a U.S. visa at the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam if any of the following apply to you:

Upcoming ESTA changes — social media disclosure: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has proposed requiring ESTA applicants to provide up to five years of social media account history, along with additional personal data such as phone numbers and email addresses used over the past ten years. These changes have not yet taken effect as of May 2026, but may be introduced in the coming months. Monitor the official CBP website for updates before applying.

Passport Requirements for U.S. Entry

To travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, your Dutch passport must meet the following requirements. Failing to meet these requirements will result in denial of boarding by the airline and possible refusal of entry by CBP.

Global Entry — Faster Border Crossing for Frequent Travellers

Dutch nationals who travel frequently to the United States may apply for Global Entry, a U.S. Trusted Traveler Program that allows expedited clearance through automated kiosks at major U.S. airports. Global Entry members skip the regular CBP queue and use dedicated kiosks on arrival. Membership also includes TSA PreCheck, which speeds up security screening at U.S. airports for departing flights.

How to apply for Global Entry as a Dutch national: Before applying, you must create a ‘Berichtenbox’ digital mailbox on MijnOverheid.nl and authorise the Koninklijke Marechaussee (KMAR) to send you messages. Then apply through the CBP Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) portal. You will receive a background check request via your Berichtenbox. If conditionally approved, you complete an in-person interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center or use Enrollment on Arrival at a U.S. airport. Note: Dutch Global Entry members still require a valid ESTA or visa for each trip — Global Entry does not replace the ESTA.

Practical Travel Tips for Dutch Visitors to the U.S.

Flights from the Netherlands to the United States

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) offers direct flights to major U.S. cities including New York (JFK/EWR), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), Chicago (ORD), San Francisco (SFO), Washington D.C. (IAD), Boston (BOS), and Atlanta (ATL), among others. KLM, Delta, and United Airlines operate the most frequent transatlantic services from Schiphol. Flight time to the U.S. East Coast is approximately 8–9 hours; to the West Coast around 11–12 hours.

Time zones

The Netherlands is in the Central European Time zone (CET/CEST). The U.S. spans multiple time zones: the East Coast (New York, Washington D.C.) is 6 hours behind the Netherlands in summer and 6 hours behind in winter. The West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco) is 9 hours behind in summer. Plan your communications and connections accordingly.

Currency, health insurance, and driving

The currency in the United States is the U.S. Dollar (USD). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout the country. Healthcare in the United States is expensive and is not covered by Dutch health insurance for non-emergency treatment. Travel insurance with comprehensive medical coverage is strongly recommended before any trip to the U.S. A valid Dutch driving licence is accepted for use as a visitor — you do not need an International Driving Permit, though some car rental companies may request one.

Frequently Asked Questions

My ESTA was denied. Can I still travel to the United States?

Yes, but you will need to apply for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa. An ESTA denial does not bar you from visiting the United States — it means you must go through the standard visa application process at the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam. A visa interview will be required and you will need to demonstrate the purpose of your trip and your intention to return to the Netherlands.

Can I extend my stay beyond 90 days in the United States?

No. Visa Waiver Program travellers are strictly limited to 90 days and cannot extend their stay or change their visa status while in the United States. If you need to stay longer than 90 days or intend to work or study, you must apply for the appropriate visa before travelling. Overstaying your authorised period is a serious immigration violation with long-term consequences, including potential bars on future U.S. travel.

Do children need their own ESTA?

Yes. Every traveller, including infants and children, must have their own approved ESTA linked to their own passport. There is no minimum age requirement. A parent or guardian can complete the ESTA application on behalf of a minor child. The ESTA fee of USD 40.27 applies to all applicants regardless of age.
