Travelling to the United States from the Netherlands
ESTA, Visa Waiver Program, entry requirements and practical travel guide — Updated May 2026
Do Dutch Citizens Need a Visa to Travel to the United States?
No — in most cases. The Netherlands has been a member of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) since 1986, one of the programme’s founding participants. Dutch passport holders can travel to the United States for tourism, business, or transit for stays of up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. However, you must have an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before you board your flight, ferry, or cruise ship. What Is ESTA and How to Apply
ESTA is an automated online system that determines whether citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries are eligible to travel to the United States. It is not a visa — it is a pre-travel authorisation that allows U.S. Customs and Border Protection to screen travellers before they arrive. An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States; CBP officers make the final decision at the port of entry.
Go to the official ESTA portal
Visit esta.cbp.dhs.gov — the only official U.S. government ESTA website. Create an account or continue as a guest applicant.
Complete the application form
Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your Dutch passport, including your passport number and expiry date. Answer the eligibility questions on health, criminal history, and travel to certain countries. Double-check all entries before submitting — errors can result in a denial.
Pay the ESTA fee
Pay USD 40 by credit or debit card. This fee — raised from USD 21 in September 2025 — is non-refundable, including in the event of a denial. The fee comprises a USD 10 processing fee and a USD 30 authorisation fee.
Receive your authorisation
Most applications are approved within minutes. In some cases the system returns a “Pending” status — check back within 72 hours. U.S. Customs and Border Protection recommends applying at least 72 hours before departure. Your ESTA is electronically linked to your passport — no printout is required, but saving the confirmation is advisable.
Travel to the United States
Present your Dutch passport at check-in and at the U.S. port of entry. Your ESTA will be verified automatically. At U.S. airports, you will be enrolled in the US-VISIT programme, which collects a digital photograph and fingerscans of two index fingers. A CBP officer will make the final decision on admission.

When You Cannot Use ESTA — Visa Required
Not all Dutch passport holders qualify for the Visa Waiver Program. You must apply for a U.S. visa at the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam if any of the following apply to you:
- You have travelled to or been present in Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Yemen (on or after 1 March 2011), North Korea, or Cuba (on or after 12 January 2021)
- You are a dual national of any of the above-mentioned countries
- Your ESTA application has previously been denied
- You have previously been refused entry to the United States or had a U.S. visa revoked
- You intend to work, study, or stay longer than 90 days
- You do not hold a biometric (e-passport) — a non-chip Dutch passport does not qualify for VWP travel
- You hold a Dutch Caribbean passport (Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten) — European Netherlands passport required for VWP
Passport Requirements for U.S. Entry
To travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, your Dutch passport must meet the following requirements. Failing to meet these requirements will result in denial of boarding by the airline and possible refusal of entry by CBP.
- The passport must be an e-passport (biometric passport with an embedded electronic chip, denoted by the chip symbol on the cover)
- The passport must have been issued after 26 October 2006
- The passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in the United States (no minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by the U.S., but check your airline’s requirements)
- Emergency or temporary Dutch passports without a chip are not accepted under the VWP — you must obtain a regular biometric passport or apply for a visa
Global Entry — Faster Border Crossing for Frequent Travellers
Dutch nationals who travel frequently to the United States may apply for Global Entry, a U.S. Trusted Traveler Program that allows expedited clearance through automated kiosks at major U.S. airports. Global Entry members skip the regular CBP queue and use dedicated kiosks on arrival. Membership also includes TSA PreCheck, which speeds up security screening at U.S. airports for departing flights.
Practical Travel Tips for Dutch Visitors to the U.S.
Flights from the Netherlands to the United States
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) offers direct flights to major U.S. cities including New York (JFK/EWR), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), Chicago (ORD), San Francisco (SFO), Washington D.C. (IAD), Boston (BOS), and Atlanta (ATL), among others. KLM, Delta, and United Airlines operate the most frequent transatlantic services from Schiphol. Flight time to the U.S. East Coast is approximately 8–9 hours; to the West Coast around 11–12 hours.
Time zones
The Netherlands is in the Central European Time zone (CET/CEST). The U.S. spans multiple time zones: the East Coast (New York, Washington D.C.) is 6 hours behind the Netherlands in summer and 6 hours behind in winter. The West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco) is 9 hours behind in summer. Plan your communications and connections accordingly.
Currency, health insurance, and driving
The currency in the United States is the U.S. Dollar (USD). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout the country. Healthcare in the United States is expensive and is not covered by Dutch health insurance for non-emergency treatment. Travel insurance with comprehensive medical coverage is strongly recommended before any trip to the U.S. A valid Dutch driving licence is accepted for use as a visitor — you do not need an International Driving Permit, though some car rental companies may request one.
Frequently Asked Questions
My ESTA was denied. Can I still travel to the United States?
Yes, but you will need to apply for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa. An ESTA denial does not bar you from visiting the United States — it means you must go through the standard visa application process at the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam. A visa interview will be required and you will need to demonstrate the purpose of your trip and your intention to return to the Netherlands.
Can I extend my stay beyond 90 days in the United States?
No. Visa Waiver Program travellers are strictly limited to 90 days and cannot extend their stay or change their visa status while in the United States. If you need to stay longer than 90 days or intend to work or study, you must apply for the appropriate visa before travelling. Overstaying your authorised period is a serious immigration violation with long-term consequences, including potential bars on future U.S. travel.
Do children need their own ESTA?
Yes. Every traveller, including infants and children, must have their own approved ESTA linked to their own passport. There is no minimum age requirement. A parent or guardian can complete the ESTA application on behalf of a minor child. The ESTA fee of USD 40.27 applies to all applicants regardless of age.
